Judith Butler’s groundbreaking books include Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity; Bodies that Matter: On the Discursive Limits of “Sex”; The Psychic Life of Power: Theories of Subjection; Excitable Speech; Antigone’s Claim: Kinship Between Life and Death; Precarious Life: Powers of Violence and Mourning; Undoing Gender; and Giving an Account of Oneself.

She is currently writing on Jewish philosophy, focusing in particular on pre-Zionist criticisms of state violence. She is the Maxine Elliot Professor of Rhetoric, Comparative Literature, and Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.
